BENTON, Wis. – During its regular meeting on Aug. 9, the Benton School Board discussed substitute teachers. The question was raised about hiring a permanent, full-time substitute, rather than calling in substitutes when the need arises.
According to Todd Bastian, Benton School District superintendent, during the 2022-23 school year, the district spent approximately $100,000 on substitute pay. The district budgeted $80,000-$90,000 going into the school year. The cost this past year was above what the district normally pays.
As for the idea of bringing on a permanent position, “We’ve talked about it,” said Bastian, noting those discussions resulted in an opinion that hiring that position was not financially feasible. The issues with hiring a full-time position include trying to find someone who is able and willing to teach K-12, rather than a specified subject or class range, such as K-4 or high school. In addition, a permanent position would include the salary, as well as district benefits.
The board did not take any action on the issue, as it was not on the agenda, but rather a discussion.
