On Wednesday, Oct, 11, the Grant County Dairy Promoters hosted From Cow to Cup: Discover Dairy, an event that helped local food influencers learn more about agriculture, dairy production, and the role dairy can play in a healthy diet. Food influencers include the media, nutritionists, school food service personnel, teachers, and chiropractors for example, all individuals who help influence the food buying decisions of others without usually working in agriculture.
26 attendees received a behind-the-scenes tour of Winch’s Pine Grove Farms, Fennimore, in addition to a cheese pairing organized by Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin (DFW).
Afterwards attendees listened to Dr. Beth Olson of UW-Madison and the Dairy Innovation Hub speak at Southwest Wisconsin Technical College about the recommendations for calcium intake, where American’s are currently getting their calcium, and the discrepancy between the two.
According to the United States Department of Agriculture dietary guidelines, American’s are lacking four nutrients: calcium, vitamin D, potassium, and dietary fiber. As a nutrient powerhouse, milk is a good source of three of the four nutrients.
After dinner participants were able to engage in conversations regarding all things dairy and food production. Participants received a reusable cooler bag with nutritional information about dairy products, farmers to follow on social media, Food Bullying by Michele Payn, and a bottle of Goodsport, a dairy-based electrolyte beverage with no sugar or lactose. Special thanks to Farm First Cooperative, DFW, the Winch Family, and all who attended. One attendee remarked, “Thank you. It was delightful and educational.”
