Richard Dieter of rural Richland Center has long been interested in Native American lore and is involved in a longtime project to identify and catalog what are commonly known as Indian trail marker trees. Such trees typically have limbs that had purposely been bent at unnatural angles, which are believed to have had specific meanings to people a century and more ago. Dieter hopes people will alert him if they see any trees such as the one pictured here, which is located in Marshall Township. A message can be left for him with the Richland County History Room, at 608-647-6033.
