Vehicles crash on Hwy. 35 after driver falls asleep

No injuries were reported Aug. 3 following a two vehicle crash on State Hwy. 35 just north of the Village of De Soto.

According to a press release from the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office in Viroqua, at approximately 5:18 p.m., a southbound vehicle driven by Judith Felke, 72 of Waukon Iowa, crossed the centerline when she fell asleep.

Felke’s vehicle hit a northbound vehicle driven by Shirley Gruden,  73, of La Crosse.

Nanferd Felke, 71, also of Waukon, was a passenger in the striking vehicle.

Passengers in the Gruden vehicle were Mavis Knutson, 73, of La Crescent, Minn., and Claire Miller, 71, also  of La Crescent.

All parties involved in the accident were wearing seatbelts.

Assisting the Sheriff’s Office were the De Soto Fire Department, the De Soto First Responders, and Tri-State Ambulance.

The accident remains under investigation.
