MUSCODA - In the world of business, especially in tourism, being a destination is important and the amount of money spent to achieve that goal must be huge.
Muscoda is beginning to feel a bit of a “destination draw.” Examples are the 12 “permanent” campsites in Riverside Park where the same folks enjoy repeated summers. Work has started to develop for more such campsites and there is already a waiting list for them at the village office.
It isn’t just the “permanent” campers that come every year. I talked with a Milwaukee man last fall who said he has been coming here to camp and hunt deer for 30 years. He has a couple of sons who will probably continue that family tradition.
There are also repeat visitors who come to run their hovercraft boats on the river and spend their nights camping. I am amazed at the distance they come to boat in our river. Some are licensed in states as far away as North Dakota and Pennsylvania, with Iowa and Illinois regulars.
Memorial Day riders on a dozen motorcycles were enjoying a rest stop in the Lions Shelter. A lady rider told me it had been a 200-mile journey.
At the same time, a short distance away on the Muscoda “beach” near the boat landing, it appeared as though the folks lounging there were in no hurry to go anywhere else. Maybe that was because they had already reached their destination.
