Junior guard makes eight 3-pointers to help Platteville clinch SWC title

Junior Andy Eggers made seven first-half 3-pointers and finished 8 of 10 from beyond the arc en route to a career-high 26 points in Fridays 8349 SWC victory over Dodgeville.

Andy Eggers, Jr., G, Platteville boys basketball

     Platteville junior guard Andy Eggers was hotter than Steph Curry last Friday night. Eggers made 8 of 10 3-point attempts, including seven makes in the first half, and finished with a career-high 26 points to lead Platteville to a dominating 83–49 victory over visiting Dodgeville. Eggers career-high helped the Hillmen (16–5, 7–2 SWC) clinch a share of Platteville’s first boys basketball conference title since 1996–97 and earned the junior sharp-shooter this week’s Mast Water Technology SWnews4U.com Athlete of the Week award.

     “Andy had a big game shooting and got himself into a good rhythm early,” said Platteville head coach Mike Huser. “His teammates did an exceptional job of getting him the ball where he could catch and shoot without any disruption. His shooting spree on Friday was not a surprise because when young men put in countless hours on summer days or when nobody is watching, then you have shooting nights like he did on Friday night. Those types of performances do not happen by accident. Right now in our program we have a number of guys that love being in the gym and they were all really happy for Andy to have that type of shooting night.”

     Eggers made three more 3-pointers and scored 15 points to help Platteville hammer Juda 90–55 on Tuesday night.

     Platteville can clinch the outright Southwest Wisconsin Conference title with a 90–57 victory over River Valley (8–10, 5–3) next Thursday night.

 

 

HONORABLE MENTION (in alphabetical order):

Cole Crubel, So., River Ridge boys basketball

     Crubel made five 3-pointers and matched a career-high 30 points to go along with nine rebounds and four assists in the Timberwolves 62–39 victory over Belmont Tuesday night. He also had 14 points and 10 rebounds in a 57–52 loss at Seneca on Monday after scoring 22 points and grabbing six boards in a 69–55 win at Benton last Thursday night. Crubel is averaging 18.4 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists, all team highs for the second-place Timberwolves (12–8, 8–2 SRW), who have won 12 of their past 16 games after and 0–4 start.

 

Brady Curtis, Jr., G, Potosi boys basketball

     Curtis averaged 18.7 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists in three Potosi wins over the past week. He scored 13 points in a 72–53 win over Galena last Tuesday, then had a team-high 23 points, eight rebounds and five assists in a 74–50 win at Cassville last Thursday. He opened this week with a 23-point, seven-rebound game in an 85–49 win over Benton Tuesday night as the Chieftains (15–5, 10–0) clinched at least a share of the Six Rivers West title.

 

Kelsie Goffinet, Sr., Southwestern/Cuba City/Benton gymnastics

     Goffinet won vault (8.95), balance beam (8.95) and the floor exercise (9.4) to win the individual all-around title at Saturday’s 11-team Lisa Steger Memorial Invitational at Platteville High School. She also placed fifth on the uneven bars (8.7) to lead the Wildcats to an eighth-place team finish.

 

Emma Lawrence, Sr., G/F, Benton girls basketball

     Lawrence rattled home a 3-pointer at the buzzer to lift the Zephyrs (13–8, 5–6 SRW) to a 59–56 non-conference victory over Albany on Monday night. She finished with a team-high 19 points and moved into second place on the school’s all-time scoring list with 1,625 points, behind only David Nies. Lawrence, who is already the Benton girls’ all-time leading scorer, scored 23 points in a 75–44 victory over Belmont last Tuesday night.

 

Kaylee Meyers, Jr., G, Darlington girls basketball

     Meyers scored 10 of her game-high 16 points in the second half to lead the Redbirds to a 57–44 victory over visiting Cuba City last Friday night. The win guaranteed Darlington (16–4, 12–1 SWAL) at least a share of its first girls basketball conference title since 2000–01. She also scored a game-high 24 points in a 54–45 victory at Boscobel (14–6, 7–6) last Tuesday night.

 

Jackson Vigen, Sr., G, Iowa–Grant boys basketball

     Vigen had 21 points, six assists and five rebounds to lead the Panthers (6–13) to a 72–55 non-conference victory at Belmont last Tuesday night, then scored a game and career-high 25 points in a 65–47 win over visiting Riverdale.
