PREP WRESTLING: Iowa–Grant/Highland wins Richland Center Invitational

Panthers maintain momentum after dual meet win at D2 #6-ranked Prairie du Chien

RICHLAND CENTER — The Iowa–Grant Panthers pulled off an impressive 51–20 non-conference victory over reigning SWC champion Prairie du Chien last Tuesday night.

The Panthers (5–1) won four of the first five matches, including a pin by senior Bode Brokopp at 285 and an 8–3 decision by Griffin Wineski at 106, to build a 17–5 lead. Sophomore Hayden Aultman at 126 and Colten Williams at 144 also scored pins in the victory. IGH was aided by forfeit wins at 132, 157 and 165.

Riding high from Tuesday’s win at Prairie du Chien, coach Ryan Allen’s Panthers kept the momentum rolling Saturday by crowning three individual champions to win the 17-team Richland Center Invitational.

The Belmont/Platteville co-op won three individual titles and scored 260.5 team points to finish third a team behind Iowa–Grant/Highland (308) and Gale–Ettrick-Trempelau/Melrose–Mindoro (294.5).

Senior Tyson Imhoff, a recent Division 1 Wisconsin commit, at 157, junior Jaxson Busse at 165, senior Gavin Hinderman at 190 won individual titles fort he champion Panthers. Sophomore Brock Hinderman  at 150 and Brokopp at 285 each went 3–1 to place second. 

Busse (14–0) scored a team-high 38 points for IGH with a first-round bye, back-to-back pins and a 15–5 major decision over Baraboo’s Nolan Owen in the 165-pound title bout.

Imhoff (13–2) used a first-round bye, and back-to-back pins to reach the 157-pound championship match were he won the title with a 9–3 decision over GET’s Gunnar Johnson.

Gavin Hinderman (9–3) opened with back-to-back pins at 190, then used a 14–5 major decision to reach the finals, where he secured his championship with a 17–1 technical fall over River Valley’s Blake Brickl (17–3).

Brock Hinderman (12–2) was pinned in his title match at 150, after a first-round bye, a tech fall an pin to reach the finals. Brokopp (13–1) suffered his first loss of the season in the 285-pound title match after breezing to the final with a bye and two pins.

Wineski placed third at 106, bouncing back from a semifinal loss with a second-period pin in his third-place match.vJackson McGuire (13–2) also went 3–1 and finished third at 175 after bouncing back from a semifinal loss.

Nine other Panthers wrestled to top-eight finishes with Lucas Christiansen (10–5) taking fifth at 132, Tucker Degenhardt (11–5) fifth at 215, Aultman (9–6) sixth at 126, Aiden Bedward (7–7) sixth at 138, Max Kelley (6–4) sixth at 144, Bryar Yelinek (3–2) sixth at 165, Colton Williams (6–9) seventh at 144, Will Whitaker (3–2) seventh at 190 and Brayden Vacha (3–8) eighth at 113.
