FOND DU LAC — The Fennimore Post 184 U19 American Legion baseball team opened the summer season with a bang last weekend in Fond du Lac.
The Railers went 3–0 over the course of Saturday and Sunday to win the 2nd annual Dock Spiders Invitational, which was held at Herr Baker Stadium at Marian University,
Heer Baker Stadium is the home of the Northwoods League’s Fond du Lac Dock Spiders, a rival team of the Madison Mallards.
Fennimore opened the six-team event with a 3–0 shutout of Marquette (Mich.) Post 55 Blues U19 team Saturday morning.
Ethan Sheckler (1–0) struck out five and allowed just two hits in five shutout innings. He also drove in a pair of runs on an RBI ground out in the first and a two-out RBI single in the third to plate leadoff hitter Macoy Miles both times.
Brock Henkel added an RBI single in the third to drive in Corey Dresen, who hit a two-out single earlier in the inning, making 3–0.
Justin Trumm, a 2023 graduate of Fennimore High School who is still allowed to play summer legion ball because he is still under 19 years old, pitched a perfect sixth, and Casey Dresen worked around two walks in the seventh to record the save.
Marquette Blue (2–1) finished tied with Rosendal (Laconia) (2–1) for second place in the tournament.
Fennimore then went on to beat St. Mary’s Springs Saturday afternoon 7–3. The Railers (3–0) scored seven runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back.
Shawn Jahnke-Fiedler smacked a two-run double to begin the scoring. Tyson Starkey added an RBI single, and after a walk by Casey Dresen, Jude Kinney hit a two-run single to make it 5–0. Colby Leeser added an RBI ground out and Kinney scored on a wild pitch to make it 7–0 before Starkey even took the mound for Fennimore.
Starkey was sharp when he did, trough four innings. He ran into a blip in the fifth allowing a pair of runs, but finished the game with five strikeouts, four walks and just one hit allowed over five innings.
Casey Dresen again came on to close out the win, striking out three and allowing just one unearned run in two innings for his second save in as many games.
On Sunday, Fennimore clinched the title with a dominating 16–5 win over the Marquette (Mich.) Post 44 Reds U17 team.
Fennimore scored four in the second and six in the second to open up a commanding 10–1 lead.
Starkey went 3-for-5 with two RBI and a pair of steals to lead the Railers. Henkel (2x3, RBI, 2R) and Jahnke-Fielder (2x4 (2RBI, R) each had two hits for Fennimore, and Corey Dresen (1x2, 2R) and Leeser each drove in two runs for the winners.
Trumm struck out four in three innings, allowing one unearned run on two hits to pick up the win. Jackson Sheckler pitched two shutout innings of relief.
Fennimore will now host Westby Thursday in a Coulee Region doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m.
