Gile no-hits Wisconsin Heights in Cuba City Tournament opening game

CUBA CITY — Cuba City softball’s return to Wisconsin proved fruitful as it went 3–0 at home on the week to improve to 5–2 overall and open play in the Southwest Wisconsin Activities League 1–0.

The Cubans’ first victim was Fennimore (5–1, 1–1) last Thursday, 12–6. They never relinquished the lead, claiming five runs in the second. Addy Schauff led Cuba City with a 2-for-3 performance that included four RBI’s, a double, and a homer. Brooklyn Droessler also cranked one out of the park against the Golden Eagles. As was the case the entire week, Payton Gile got the win pitching all seven innings. She allowed five hits and six runs, while striking out 11 and walking four.

Next up was a home tournament two days later, where Cuba City swept both of its opponents.

First up was Wisconsin Heights (1–2), who fell to the Cubans in five innings, 10–0. The Vanguards only reached base via a trio of walks as senior Gile pitched a no-hitter, striking out 11. Ella Vosberg was a perfect 3-for-3 (1 RBI) with a pair of doubles and a triple. Gile also hit two doubles on a 2-for-3 day.

Dodgeville’s (2–4) time also came on Apr. 5, and it fell to Cuba City, 5–1. Trina Redfern and Gile both went 2-for-3, with Josie Kruser also hopping in a 1-for-2 performance that included a homer. Gile nearly earned another no-hitter, allowing one hit and one run, while sending 13 batters away and walking one.

Cuba City stayed home to host Darlington (0–4, 0–1) Thursday, followed by Iowa–Grant (2–1, 1–0) on Monday.
