Belmont/Platteville co-ops wins first tournament in program history
BELLEVILLE — The Belmont/Platteville wrestling co-op made program history Saturday when it won the team title at the nine-team 2024 Sugar River Raider Scramble.
It was the first team championship for the Belmont/Platteville co-op, which began in 2003–04, since 2004.
The Braves did however finish second in the same gym at the 2023 WIAA Division 2 Belleville Regional to advance to the D2 Team Sectionals two years ago.
On Saturday, the Braves crowned seven individual champions and had three runners-up among its 12 wrestlers, and piled up 246 team points to run away from runner-up host Belleville/Monticello/New Glarus (175) and third-place Monroe (147.5).
“I think this weekend proved not just to ourselves but to everyone else that we are for real,” said BP head coach Emeric Williams. “The key going forward would be to be happy with what we’ve done, but to keep our feet on the gas pedal and keep improving, especially with the regional we have. We know what we are capable of, but now it’s our job to make sure we get there.”
Sophomore Aiden Weigel (9–3) at 120, freshman Briggs Weigel (13–2) at 132, junior Tyler Kisamore (14–1), seniors Mason Oellerich (6–2) at 157, Kadyn Davis (12–2) at 175 and Mason Mandurano (10–2) at 215, and junior Thomas Kaster (6–0) each won individual titles for BP Saturday.
Aidan Weigel with four pins and a bye, and Kastner with three pins and two byes each scored a team-high 26 points. Briggs Weigel used a bye, three pins and a 16–0 technical fall in the 132-pound championship to score 25.5 points.
Dylan Wegiel (11–1), a two-time state qualifier for the Braves went 4–1 and finished second at 144 and suffered his first loss of the season to Dodgeville’s Haakon Peterson, who went 46–0 last year as a sophomore and won the D2 113-pound title, a 3–2 overtime loss.
“Obviously having seven champs stands out, but I think Dylan’s match might be the most impressive,” said Taking Haakon Peterson to the ultimate tiebreaker is very impressive. Not exactly sure what he’s ranked in the nation, but he’s definitely up there being one of the best in the nation. That was a huge boost of confidence for Dylan, reassuring him that he belongs with the best of the best.”
Freshman Oliver Harcus (5–2) went 4–1 and placed second at 138, while junior Cam Moore (4–1) went 2–1 to place second in the four-man 190-pound weight class.
“It was very solid competition, with multiple teams in our regional, so it was nice to get some early matches in against those teams.”
Belleville/Monticello/New Glaurs, Monroe, fifth-place Dodgeville (114) and seventh-place Brodhead/Juda (53) will all compete alongside BP at the 13-team Dodgeville regional Saturday, Feb. 15.
The Braves (2–0) tuned up for Saturday’s championship run with a pair of non-conference dual meet victories over Riverdale and River Ridge Thursday night at Platteville High School.
Belmont/Platteville defeated Riverdale 45–31, then dominated shorthanded River Ridge 71–6 with five pins, one technical fall and six forfeits.
The Braves also picked up six forfeits against the Chieftains, as well as a pin by Briggs Weigel at 132 and a 5–3 win by Dylan Weigel at 144 to get past Riverdale, which won five of the seven contested varsity matches.
The Belmont/Platteville girls traveled to Waunakee Friday night for the Warrior Girls Invitational and brought home a pair of top two finishes.
Senior Kailie Davis (5–0), the WIAA Girls state runner- up a year ago at 165 pounds, went 5–0 with four pins and an 18–3 tech fall in the pre- lims. Davis pinned Bensen- ville Fenton’s Ariana Solideo in the 235-pound Gold cham- pionship match.
Freshman Jaycie Davis went 4–1 with three pins and a bye to finish second at 152-pounds in the Gold divi- sion.
“I couldn’t be prouder of the whole program this weekend. From our duals on Thurs- day, to the girls on Friday night, to our JV wrestlers in Evansville, to our varsity in Belleville, it has to be one of our best weekends ever, and now we just need to build off of it.”
