SIBLING CHAMPS: Belmont/Platteville Weigels, Davises win individual conference titles

A pair of siblings combined to win four individual titles over the weekend for the Belmont/Platteville wrestling team.

Friday night, Belmont sisters Kalie and Jaycie Davis won individual titles at the 24-team SWC/SWAL Girls Clash at Belmont High School. The 13 schools in the SWC and SWAL welcomed 11 teams from the Ridge and Valley and Scenic Bluffs conferences to form a mega conference meet with 74 total wrestlers in 12 weight classes.

Kalie Davis, a Platteville senior and the reigning  WIAA Girls 185-pound state runner-up, won the 235-pound conference title Friday night with three first-period pins and a medical forfeit and was named the SWC Girls Wrestling MVP.

Davis (35–1) clinched her conference title with a 52-second pin of Mineral Point sophomore Haylee Yager (24–17) in the final round of the five-girl 235-pound round robin bracket.

Jaycie Davis (25–5), a freshman, won the girls 152-pound title with a 1:29 pin of Lancaster’s Sophia Burr (13–11) and a 43-second pin of Kickapoo/La Farge’s Mara Hubele (9–16) in her three-girl weight class.

“Jaycie and Kalie have continued their success throughout the season,” said BP girls head coach Travis Droessler. “I’m really proud of all their hard work, and we are seeing the results of their dedication. It’s especially meaningful that Kalie was able to finish her career as the SWC Girls Wrestling MVP. She has worked hard, and the honor is well deserved. She is poised and ready for the postseason, and I can’t wait to see how far she goes.”

“Jaycie has been outstanding, especially as a freshman. A 25–5 record and a conference championship heading into the postseason are incredible achievements. She has set high goals for herself, and I’m excited to see her reach them. The sky is the limit for both of them.

The Davis sisters combined to scored 27 teams points good for a 11th-place team finish for Belmont/Platteville.

Kickapoo/La Farge, which had a tournament-best 11 wrestlers, won the team title with 94.5 points, ahead of Lancaster (90), Prairie du Chien (85) and Mineral Point (84.5).

A day later, it was Platteville brothers Dylan and Briggs Weigel, who led the Belmont/Platteville boys wrestling team at the SWC/SWAL Clash at Prairie du Chien High School.

Briggs (#3-ranked in D2), a Platteville freshman, won the 126-pound title in his first Clash with a 6–4 victory over Dodgeville’ sophomore Rhett Spurley (40–9, D2 #2).

Briggs Weigel reached the finals with a first-round bye and back-to-back pins of Richland Center’s Brock Barrett (17–16) and Mineral Point’s Elliot Kite (21–14).

Dylan (D2 #4), a junior, won the 138-pound Clash title with a gritty 9–6 win over Riverdale’s Brody Miess (33–4, D3 #3).

The elder Weigel, who finished second at 138 at the Clash a year ago, reached this year’s finals with a first-round bye, a 23–3 technical fall of Iowa–Grant/Highland’s Aiden Bedward (21–19) and a 7–3 win over Cuba City/Benton/Southwestern’s Conner Briemeyer (32–8) in the semifinals.

Belmont junior Tyler Kisamore (42–7) battled back from a quarterfinal loss to Fennimore  junior Ryder Zdanczewicz (17–6) by winning three-straight consolation matches to finish third at 157 after a 13–8 win over Mineral Point’s Sawyer Danneberg.

Belmont senior Mason Oellerich (32–13) went 3–2 and place fourth at 150 for the BP co-op, as did Platteville senior Mason Mandurano (36–13) at 215 pounds.

Freshman Oliver Harcus (14–9) went 2–3 and finished sixth at 144, while sophomore Aidan Wiegel (30–15) at 120 and senior Rusty Wruck (18–10) at 285 each placed seventh.

Sophomore Adam Whisenant (9–8) at 113 and junior Cam Moore (23–14) at 190 each finished eighth for the Belmont/Platteville co-op.

Steldt, Freymiller win Clash titles to lead Fennimore

By Jason Nihles

PRAIRIE DU CHIEN — The Fennimore boys wrestling team is nearing full strength the doubters better take notice.

First-year head coach Riley Lull’s had his entire varsity lineup for the first time this year Saturday and his Golden Eagles racked up 190.5 points to finish second at the 13-team SWC/SWAL Clash conference tournament.

“Obviously the goal was to win the conference title, but it was a good showing considering a lot of people are overlooking us right now,” said Lull. “And Saturday proved Fennimore is still a tough out.

“It was a good showing overall and good to get everyone on the mat for the first time this season to show that we are still a tough team.”

Mineral Point crowned three individual champions and scored 208 points to win the Clash title.

“We weren’t really too far out of first place,” added Lull. “If a couple different matches went our way, we could have been the champion in a loaded conference with Point, Iowa–Grant, Prairie du Chien, and Belmont/Platteville; and even Dodgeville with a number of talented individuals.”

Senior Tristan Steldt went 4–0 and cruised to the 165-pound title, his third straight individual conference title to lead Lull’s Golden Eagles. Steldt (30–3), the top-ranked 165-pounder in Division 2, recorded back-to-back first-period pins after a first-round bye to reach the finals, where he scored a dominant 4–1 victory over Iowa–Grant/Highland junior Jaxon Busse (37–3).

“It was a 4–1 match in the finals, but it was a pretty decisive 4–1 win,” said Lull. “He was close to getting a few other takedowns and he was the more offensive wrestler the entire six minutes.”

Senior Syler Zdanczewicz went 3–1 to finish second at 150 pounds Saturday. Zdanczewicz (22–7, #3 in D2) advanced to the finals with a bye, and back-to-back third-period pins over IGH’s Aiden Friesen and Belmont/Platteville’s Mason Oellerich before a grueling 4–1 overtime loss to D2 #1-ranked Owen Seffrood (36–0), a senior from Darlington/Black Hawk. Zdanczewicz will likely get another shot at Seffrood at Saturday’s WIAA D2 Dodgeville Regional.

Freshman Carson Basset returned to the lineup for the first time since Jan. 16 due to an injury and went 4–1 to finish third at 113 pounds. Basset (16–7), ranked #8 in D2 at 106, rebounded from a semifinal loss to eventual champion Shane Rochon (45–1) of Dodgeville with an 11–4 decision and a 9–0 major decision over Mineral Point’s Lennon Ewert (24–10) in the 113-pound third-place match.

Junior Cade Birchman (29–9) at 120, sophomore Colton Tollefson (26–8) at 144, and seniors Nathan Blaschke (18–8) at 175 and Jayden Kopp (23–11) at 215 each finished third for Fennimore. Seniors Drew Crubel (15–12) and Dalton Wolf (28–12, #5) each went 3–2 to finish fourth at 190 and 285 respectively.

The top two teams at Saturday’s regional will advance to Tuesday’s D2 Prairie du Chien Team Sectional. The top four individuals in each weight class will advance to Saturday’s D2 Wisconsin Dells Invitational Sectional.

This will be the Golden Eagles first postseason in Division 2 after winning three straight WIAA 3 Team State titles bumped them up a division due to the WIAA’s Competitive Balance initiative.

“The goal team-wise, is to place enough kids high enough to advance to Tuesday’s Team Sectionals,” said Lull. “And its really important to win the regional, so we get to face a regional second place team in the first dual at  Tuesday’s Team sectional.

Fourth-ranked Evansville, #8 Darlington/Black Hawk #9 Belmont/Platteville and #10 Prairie du Chien will be the team vying with Fennimore for the top two spots.

“There are seven #1-ranked kids in our regional and five ranked teams, but its nothing to shy away from,” added Lull. “Our regional is great way to start the run to the Kohl Center.

Iowa–Grant/Highland's Imhoff, Hinderman win Clash titles

PRAIRIE DU CHIEN — Iowa–Grant/Highland seniors Tyson Imhoff and Gavin Hinderman won individual titles to lead the Panthers to a third-place finish third at Saturday’s 13-team SWC/SWAL Clash at Prairie du Chien High School.

Imhoff, a University of Wisconsin recruit, won the 157-pound title, while Hinderman was crowned a champion at 190.

Imhoff (34–8), a Clash runner-up last year at 150 pounds, used a first-round bye, a tech fall and a medical forfeit over PdC’s Bryce Lenzendorf (35–8) to reach Saturday’s finals, where he dominated River Valley’s Wyatt Nachreiner 11–0.

Hinderman (27–7), who place fourth at 175 at last year’s Clash, defeated River Valley’s Blake Brickl 10–6 in this year’s finals after a bye, a second-period pin and an 8–2 victory.

Freshman Griffin Wineski (28–12) at 106 and junior Jaxon Busse (37–3) at 165 placed second for the Panthers, while senior Bode Brokopp also went 4–1 to finish third at 285 after rebounding from a semifinal loss.

IGH tallied 168.5 team points to finish behind champion Mineral Point (208) and runner-up Fennimore (190.5). SWC duals champion Prairie du Chien finished fourth ahead of Belmont/Platteville (123.5) and Dodgeville (111).

“The Clash is always loaded with tough teams and individuals,” said Panthers’ head coach Ryan Allen. “Anytime you finish top three at this tournament it is a good finish. That being said, I think we could have done some things better.

“As a team, I think we need to be locked in mentally a little better. We left a lot of team points out there that we could have gotten. Mineral point is very good and to beat them we (at regionals) are going to have to do all the little things right like scoring bonus points and stating aggressive throughout the whole match. This weekend will be a lot of fun and we are going to need every single guy on this team to do their part if we want to win.”

Coach Allen’s Panthers will travel to Mineral Point for the 13-team WIAA Division 3 Mineral Point Regional. The top two teams will advance to Tuesday’s D3 Mineral Point Team Sectional.
