Several locals shine in annual WBCA All-Star Games

WISCONSIN DELLS — A number of area basketball standouts finished their prep basketball careers at the annual Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association All-Star Games last week at JustAGame Fieldhouse in Wisconsin Dells.

Boscobel’s Erin Knowles scored a co-team-high 13 points in Wednesday’s Division 4 Girls All-Star Game for the South stars in a 80–68 loss.

The North used a dominating 31–9 first quarter to grab control of the game and never relinquished the lead. Neillsville’s Paris Opelt 10 of her game-high 20 points opening period to help the North built a 22-point lead. 

Ashley Chilson from Eau Claire Regis added 13 points and Emily Cooper of Chippewa Falls McDonell Central added 12. Three players hit double figures for the South. 

New Glarus’ Lindsey Schadewalt scored nine of her 13 points in the second quarter as the South won the quarter 26–16 to trim the North’s lead to 47–35 at the half. But eight different players scored in the third quarter as the North pushed the team back to 23 points with a 23–12 run. 

Fennimore’s Braycee Nelson scored seven points in a losing effort, and Mineral Point’s Belle Watters also played on the South team, but did not score.

Darlington’s Brad Solberg, Lancaster’s Courtney Feller and New Glarus’ Kevin Parmann coached the Division 4 All-Stars.

DIVISION 3 GIRLS
The North topped the South 63–48 in the Division 3 Girls All-Star Game last Wednesday. Molly Janke of Ellsworth led three players in double figures with 21 points. Alyssa Wirth of Altoona chipped in with 12 while Lucy Belisle of Saint Croix Falls scored 10. Gracie Gopalan from Waupun was the top scorer for the South with nine points. Dodgeville’s Marley Busch scored six points in the loss.

DIVISION 5 GIRLS
Behind a huge performance from Elkhart Lake–Glenbeulah’s Coryn Fromm, the South squad defeated the North 78–52 in the Division 5 Girls All-Star Game. Fromm knocked down five, three-pointers en route to a game-high 29 points. She was the only player from the South to reach double-figures. Highland’s Bronwyn Halverson scored six points in the South’s win. Anna Tisch of Pecatonica added seven points. Mackenzie Tarman from Turtle Lake led the North with 12 points.

WBCA BOYS ALL-STAR GAMES
WISCONSIN DELLS — Eight area boys basketball standouts finished their prep basketball careers at the annual Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Boys’ All-Star Games Thursday at JustAGame Fieldhouse in Wisconsin Dells.

Platteville’s Davyn Edge hit a 3-pointer in the Black team’s 144–114 victory in the Division 3 All-Star Game. Prep teammate Zach McClain played on the opposing team, collecting six points and a handful of rebounds for the losing White team.

Big scoring days from Zay Howards of Turner and Jaiden Martin of Dominican helped the Black team pull away for the 30-point win after outscoring the White team 33–19 in the final quarter. Martin led all players with 28 points, while Howards connected for 24, 22 of those coming after halftime. 

Henry Hoel of Stanley–Boyd and Cody Schmitz of Gale–Ettrick–Trempeleau led the White team with 15 points each.

Iowa–Grant shooting guard Cyle Steffl score 14 points to help the White team post a 123–108 victory in the Division 4 All-Star Game. Steffl scored nine points in White’s 42-point second quarter to turn a 12-point first-quarter deficit into a 66–60 halftime advantage. Steffl was one of eight White All-Stars to score in double-figures in the win and all 12 scored at least four points. 

Jaxon Tilton of Unity scored a team-high 21 points to lead the winners. 

The Black team was led by 21 points from Pardeeville’s Austin Hohn, who connected on seven, three-pointers. Darlington's Will Murray scored six points for the Black team.

In the first Boys All-Star Game of the day, Potosi’s Gavin Wunderlin scored nine points in the Black teams’ 133–110 victory. Wunderlin scored seven of his nine points in a 43-point fourth quarter that helped the Black team put the game away. 

Shullsburg’s Heath Poppy had eight points in the decisive final quarter, finishing with 17 for the game, and Shullsburg’s J.J. Berendes chipped in 10 for the winners. River Ridge’s Matthew Nies added four points for the Black stars. 

Isaiah Kastern of Solon Springs led all scorers with 25 points for the Black squad. J.J. McKellips from Lourdes Academy led the White team with 22 points, including six made three-pointers.
