Track teams open at Royall Early Bird Invite

ELROY — Weather has certainly been a challenge early this season for first-year Hillsboro track and field coach Heath Revels and his team.

But Revels’ Tigers finally kicked off the season at last Thursday’s Royall Early Bird Invitational.

The Hillsboro girls scored 108 points and finished second behind Brookwood (186) at the five-team event. Meanwhile, the Hillsboro boys placed foufth with 72 points, behind host Royall (202), runner-up Brookwood (146) and third-place Wonewoc–Center (83).

“We’ve got some work to do, but it went well overall for the first meet,” said Revels, a 2006 Hillsboro graduate who competed in track and field for the Tigers all four years. “We had some good leadership and performances from our older athletes and some promising performances from our younger athletes.”

Freshman Jaline Attignol won the girls 400 with a time of 1:12.37 in her first varsity track meet.

Attignol also teamed with fellow freshman Paige Stull, senior Amy Salisbury and sophomore Lydia Benish to finish second in the 4x800 relay (12:22.03).

Sophomores Courtney Fanta and Carly Krajco, freshman Mackenzie Morris and senior April Thornsen placed second in the 4x200 relay at 2:13.16.

Senior Zea Woods (20.0 seconds) and junior Kailey Preuss (20.31) finished first and second in the 100-meter hurdles. Woods also place second in the triple jump (29’2½”).

In the boys’ competition, junior Zach O’Hair won the 3,200 in a time of 12:04.66, while sophomore Dakota Wells finished second 12:06.0.

Senior Skyler Fisher place second in the 800 at 2:21.91 and fourth in the triple jump (34’5”).

The Tigers’ 4x800 relay team of Fisher, Wells, O’Hair and sophomore Paul-Andrew Griffin finished second (9:54.63).

Junior thrower Ean Levy finished third in the discus (107’5”) and fourth in the shot put (38’0”).

The Tigers will return to action Monday at the Kickapoo Lee Griffin Invitational.

This Tuesday Hillsboro competed at the North Crawford Invitational. Results were not available at press time.

Riverdale wrestlers pick up two wins

MUSCODA - The wrestling team had one final warm up before the Bi-State Classic, heading to Belmont on Tuesday night. The team picked up two wins defeating Belmont/Platteville 42-33 and Pecatonica Argyle 48-24.

Rylee Wanek started the

Belmont/Platteville dual with a pin at 170 pounds. After a forfeit to Dietrich Buchholz at 182 Kadin Rynes moved up to 195 and won by pin. At 220 pounds Dreyton Deglow competed in a back and forth match and ended up on the losing end 10-7. Riverdale forfeited at heavyweight and had a 18-9 lead moving into 106.

Jordan Bomkamp would put together a great performance. He scored two takedowns and rode his opponent hard on his way to a 4-0 victory. This was a big swing match and Jordan came through when called on. Terry Sage jumped back into the varsity lineup with a fighting performance before falling by pin late in the third period. Brody Miess would follow with a pin at 120 to move to 16-1 on the season.

Carson Knight jumped up a weight class and would fall by pin to a tough Belmont/Platteville wrestler. Sean Duffy picked up a forfeit at 132 and Nick Stitzer would avenge a loss at the Richland Center Invite with a 6-2 win to secure the dual for Riverdale. After two Riverdale forfeits Ashton Miess would collect a big lead before securing the fall at 160 pounds.

In the dual against Pecatonica/ Argyle Nick Stitzer and Sean Duffy would pick up pins on the way to the 48-24 victory. The team is now 8-0 on the season and their next dual will be at home on Thursday, January 12 when they wrestle Boscobel/Wauzeka- Stueben and River Valley.

JH wrestling begins

Riverdale Junior High wrestling will hold their first practice of the season in the RES small gym after school until 5:15 on Tuesday, January 2. This is open to any boys or girls in grade 6-8. This is a great time to try the sport in an environment conducive to learning basic moves and competing against kids of your own ability.
