PATCH GROVE – The talented trio of senior Maria Breuer, junior Taylor Langmeier and sophomore Skylar White, combined to score 48 points in River Ridge’s 53-37 season-opening non-conference victory over visiting Wauzeka last Thursday night.
Under longtime head coach Caron Townsend, the River Ridge girls’ basketball team is off to a 1-0 start to the 2017-18 season, and having four returning starters back for this season should obviously play to the Timberwolves’ advantage.
Visiting Wauzeka-Steuben had no answer for River Ridge’s tough man-to-man defense which came up with 24 total steals and led to a number of fast-break baskets.
Benefiting the most from her team’s defensive pressure was sophomore guard Skylar White, who had a team-high eight steals. White also led her team with 27 points, scoring both on drives to the basket, and on four 3-pointers.
Senior forward Maria Breuer dominated in the post with a team-high seven rebounds to go along with 12 points, while junior forward Taylor Langmeier added nine points and had five steals.
As a team, the Timberwolves made 18-of-56 (32%) field goal attempts, including 5-of-25 (20%) from 3-point range. They were 12-of-22 (54.5%) from the free throw line and committed 19 total turnovers.
Following this past Tuesday night’s road game at Fennimore, the Timberwolves will travel to Prairie du Chien on Monday, Nov. 27, then will kick off play in the Six Rivers West conference with a road game at Benton on Friday, Dec. 1.
