PATCH GROVE 9/1 – Sophomore quarterback Brandon Davis used his legs and his arm to push the Timberwolves past visiting Belleville last Friday night in a crossover football contest.

With a 24-0 victory over the Wildcats, coach Wade Winkers’ River Ridge football team improves to 3-0 on the season, while Belleville falls to 0-3.

Though this years two crossover games between the Six Rivers and SWAL conferences will be used to determine playoff eligibility, they do not count toward a team’s conference record.

On the legs of Davis, River Ridge took a 16-0 lead into the locker room at halftime, after neither team put up any points in the first quarter of Friday night’s contest.

Davis first found the end zone on a 47-yard touchdown run with 7:58 to play in the second quarter. Junior fullback Andrew Nies added the two-point conversion run for an 8-0 lead.

On River Ridge’s very next offensive possession, Davis got loose again, this time for a 66-yard TD run, followed again by a two-point conversion run from Nies.

With the River Ridge defense continuing to keep the Wildcats out of the end zone in the second half, junior running back Drake Barrineau extended the Timberwolves’ lead on a three-yard TD plunge with 48 seconds to play in the third quarter. A two-point conversion pass from Davis to junior end Carter Copsey gave River Ridge a commanding 24-0 lead going into the fourth quarter.

While River Ridge concluded the night with 350 yards of total offense, 302 of which came on the ground, the Wildcats were limited to 220 yards of offense, only 96 coming on the ground.

Davis accounted for 221 total yards of offense and scored two touchdowns for the Timberwolves, rushing for 173 yards and two TDs on 17 attempts, while completing 5-of-12 passing attempts for 48 yards.

Andrew Nies supplied the punch up the middle for River Ridge’s offense, rushing for 84 yards on 20 carries, while Brock Bunge added 17 yards on three rushing attempts and Drake Barrineau 16 yards on five carries.

Brady Bunge caught a team-high three receptions for 13 yards, while Ty Adrian had one catch for 30 yards and Copsey one catch for five.

Defensively the Timberwolves were led by Andrew Nies, who had 10 total tackles from his linebacker position.

Davis and Barrineau each had six tackles, with Davis also coming away with an interception and big return from the Belleville end zone late in the third quarter. Brady Bunge and Ty Adrian each had interceptions as well, while Davis, Nies and Owen Callahan each had one sack.

The Timberwolves will next play their second crossover game against a SWAL opponent when they travel to Mineral Point (1-2) this Friday night. The Pointers are coming off a 31-23 victory over Southwestern/East Dubuque after losing to Lancaster and Platteville in the first two weeks.
