The Platteville Hillmen cross country harriers placed 3rd in both the girls’ and the boys’ large school division competitions at the Saturday’s 44th Annual Dick McKichan Platteville Cross Country Invitational this past Saturday.
Twenty-five teams participated in the event and ran in one large field race of 175 runners for both the boys and girls.
After each race, the teams were divided into large and small divisions according to school enrollments for separate team scoring.
Led by another record-setting performance from senior standout Tricia Serres, the Lady Hillmen scored 80 points finishing behind only Dodgeville/Mineral Point (29) and Madison Edgewood (51). Serres bested her old course record of 14:22, set last year, with a new record time of 14:15 to win third consecutive Platteville Invitational individual title.
“Tricia ran a great race. Very composed, and strong,” said Platteville head coach and father Rob Serres. “She ran a great time to win her third victory in as many years.”
Rounding out the Platteville varsity girls’ squad were; Laura Donovan (16th), Emma Wilson (19th), Holly Kasper (20th), Cassandra Hirsch (24th), Katie Melssen (28th) and Allie Serres (34th).
The girls’ JV team placed fifth in the field of 25 Teams.
Platteville’s boys’ team was led by John Donovan who medaled by finishing 10th in a time of 17:04. He was followed closely by Tyler Schaefer (17:06, 11th), Adam Niehaus (17:19, 13th), Ben Bahr (17:50, 18h), Coda Phillips (18:19, 28th), David Hahn (30th), and Quincy Pick (31st).
The Hillmen boys’ JV, who placed 4th overall, were led by medalist Wade Roberts in 8th place.
The Dodge/Point boys’ made it a clean sweep of the large school team titles edging out Monroe 40-46.
In the small schools division, Darlington swept the team titles with Boscobel finishing second in the girls’ varsity race, and Albany second in the boys’.
Iowa-Grant/Highland’s boys finished eight in the small schools division with 209 points. I-G freshman Jordan Jenks finished 12th in the small schools boys’ race with a time of 17:39.
The Iowa-Grant girls finished ninth. Grace Enloe turned in I-G’s top female finish, a 31st place finish.
The boys’ individual competition was fierce as three runners broke the old course record of 16:02 set in 2008 by Sauk Prairie’s Jerry Kerska. Darlington’s Tyson Miehe, the overall boys’ winner, now holds the new course record of 15:39. He was followed closely by Ryan McCoy of New Glarus/Moticello in 15:45 and Joe McKenna - the large schools individual champion - of Madison Edgewood in 15:54.
“The races were very intense this year, with some incredible team and individual races,” added Serres. “I was very pleased with our kids. We ran hard, and were competitive right to the finish. To place third in this field was a nice finish for both of our teams.”
